my first blog also

Mike, I hope your cold gets better. take some good drugs. Make sure you don't have a drug resistant form of TB.

Not that it matters, but dylan and I are leaving from Raleigh, not Charleston. no big deal.
In case anyone is interested, we are flying JetBlue flight #1102 at 1100 am from RDU and arrive at 1228 at JFK.
Our return flight from JFK is flight #1109. We leave JFK June 15 at 940pm and get back to RDU at 11552pm. yuk. that is one long day of travel.

WE ARE SO EXCITED!!
Today was my last day of work. Now I am at home and getting ready to pack some more t-shirts. We are taking the dogs to the kennel around 530. We are really going to miss them.
Cool, my first blob posting. Last day of work prior to the trip. We are ready!

Maps

As much as I like Google Maps, which is great for a bird's eye view of a location, I'm a really big fan of Via Michelin, which is the best site I've ever found for addresses and driving directions in Europe.

My cold feels like it's getting worse. Damn it.

Gelato in Rome

I just wanted to post this link to every single gelateria (ice cream parlor) in the city of Rome so I can find it again when we're there.

Venice and Chiusi locations

Renee just sent me websites of the places they've rented in Venice and Chiusi. They'll be staying there after Nicole, Dylan, Jan and I go home.

Venice - Residence Palazzo Odoni, which looks to be located somewhere around here.

Chiusi - Podere Sionne III, which is located around here.

I really do wish that Italians did a better job of telling people actual physical addesses on rentals. I guess the idea is get close to where you want to be and ask a local. At least that's what we've done on previous trips to Italy sometimes.

Less than two days to go

Our flight leaves from Reagan National Airport in DC at 3:55 PM on June 1st, arriving at JFK in New York at 5:28 PM. Then we leave JFK for Rome at 9:45 PM. We'll have over four hours layover.

But that's nothing compared to everyone else. All the Floridians leave Sarasota sometime around 1:00 and arrive at JFK around 3:00. About seven hours stuck in the airport. But poor Nicole and Dylan will be arriving at JFK from Charleston at around 1:00 PM. Close to nine hours stuck in the airport.

So I guess we can't complain too much about how long we'll be stuck there.

Jan and I have almost everything packed. Our hold baggage is all set, apart from a few tour books. We need to pack up our carry ons, but we figure we can do that after we get home from work tomorrow night.

And the best news? I'm fighting what feels like the flu. I was starting to feel sick Monday afternoon, and I'm still pretty stuffed up today. Hopefully I'll shake this thing before we leave. Travelling while sick pretty much sucks. I hope Jan doesn't catch it from me.

We're scheduled to arrive at the Rome airport (Fiumicino) at noon local time on Saturday, June 2nd. Which is Renee's birthday. Jan and I have our 18th wedding anniversay on June 3rd. And Mom's birthday is the 4th. We'll have a lot to celebrate when we land.

Who, when, where?

Eleven of us are all flying to Italy on June 1st, arriving in Rome on June 2nd. Mom and Dad, Renee, Paige and their three kids, Nicole and Dylan, and Jan and I. Eight adults and three boys, age 14, 12 and 10. Wow!

Nicole, Dylan, Jan and I will be there for two weeks, and Mom and Dad, Renee and Paige and the kids will be there for another week after we leave.

The first stop will be Rome, and we'll be staying until June 6th in this apartment, which is only about two blocks from the Vatican.

By coincidence, it turns out that one of Jan's co-workers is from the Philippines, and attended Assumption College in San Lorenzo. That school was founded by an order of nuns that started in France, and the founder of that order of nuns, Sister Marie Eugénie de Jésus, is being canonized as a saint on June 3rd. Jan's co-worker is going to be in Rome for the canonization, and she's going to be able to get tickets for us too. So we'll actually be able to see the Pope himself perform a canonization in Saint Peter's Basilica.

We'll be in Rome until the 6th, when we depart for Molise to stay in a Bed & Breakfast in Torella del Sannio for one night. The reason we're heading to Molise is that is where the Listorti family came from. Dad's grandfather and grandmother (his father's parents) were born and raised there are came to the USA in 1903 and 1905. Their home town was Castelbottaccio, which is about a 20 kilometer drive from the B&B.

From Molise, we're heading to the Amalfi Coast, and we'll arrive there on June 7th. We're staying in a Bed & Breakfast near Sorrento for three nights.

From the Amalfi Coast, we'll be driving down to Sicily to stay for another four nights in a villa in Rodia, a small town near Messina, not far San Piero Patti, the town where Dad's maternal grandparents came from.

We're all flying back to Rome from Catania on the 14th, but Mom & Dad, Renee & Paige and the kids will be stopping for just about an hour because from there they're heading to Venice for a day. After Venice, they're renting a car and driving to Tuscany where they're going to finish up their final week in Chiusi.

On the night of the 14th, Nicole, Dylan, Jan and I will be staying in a B&B in Ostia, which is near the Rome airport. Then the four of us will be flying back to the States on the 15th.

This is going to be an incredibly fun trip. Of course, with eleven of us, we're renting two cars, one nine passenger van and one five passenger "full size" car.

I'm really curious to see how that nine passenger behemoth is going to navigate some of the narrow Italian streets.

According to the rental car agency, we'll be renting a Fiat Ducato.
